Prayer and Reflections

Is It Well With Your Soul?

“May the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will.”
- Hebrews 13:20-21
Music, especially hymns and gospel songs, have long been a source of nourishment to my soul, whether to encourage me with a surge of hope and joy, comfort me like a balm, or convict me of areas of weakness and sin that I need to bring before God and seek His mercy, grace, and power to overcome.

Listening to hymns while performing routine tasks or singing along on a long, solitary drive are other ways that boost my spirits and energize me. As an early childhood teacher, I often used music to teach fundamental truths, get the children’s attention, and distract from the monotony of drills.

Before my mother’s death, she began showing signs of the end of life. I placed a CD player in her room to play hymns around the clock to ease her restlessness, which it did so well. The assisted living facility where she lived called me in the early morning hours the day before her 101st birthday to tell me she had passed peacefully in her sleep. When I walked into her room, the CD player was still on, and “It Is Well With My Soul” immediately played. I knew in my heart where she was, but that confirmation gave me great peace.

Not long after that, I heard a song by Joey Feek and Bradley Walker titled, “Did I Do All I Could Do In The Time That You Gave Me.” I was moved to tears as I reflected on the limited amount of time we have to make a difference for the kingdom of God. This motivated me to renew my commitment to do all I can in whatever time I have remaining to share the good news of God’s love, saving grace, and sovereignty over all things—even death.

If you do not have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ that enables you to say, “It is well with my soul,” I pray you will confess your need for Him and surrender your life to Him today. If you know Jesus as your personal Savior, yet have wandered from Him, know He is waiting with outstretched arms and unconditional love for you to return. Don’t wait until it’s too late to discover it is well with your soul!

“On the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul.” - Psalm 138:3

Peace comes in knowing
That in Jesus Christ my soul is secure,
And no matter what may come my way
His promised deliverance is sure.

Peace comes in submission
To His highest will and way,
Trusting though I may not see,
Where He will lead each day.

Peace comes in believing
That His laws are for the best,
And as I follow where He leads
I will experience His sweet rest.

Peace is mine when remembering
He has a place prepared for me
Where there’ll be no pain or suffering
But joy and peace for eternity.
