Joy versus Happiness
"Don't worry, Be Happy" was a popular song a number of years ago, with T-shirts bearing the logo being worn as well. Although happiness is the expressed desire of many, perhaps we would do well to consider joy instead.
Happiness is based on circumstances, much like the tides that move in and out at the beach, so our sense of "happiness" fluctuates with changing circumstances. One of the most difficult realities to face as a Christian is that we are not protected from many of the harsh realities of life. God has not promised to shield us but rather to see us through these difficult times that all of the human race is subjected to.
Joy, instead, is based on something much deeper. It is a sense that God is in control, and regardless of what we may face, He has promised never to leave us (Heb. 13:5) and to work in all things for our good and His purposes (Rom. 8:28). We are reminded that His compassions are new every morning and great is His faithfulness (Lam. 3:23). Therein is joy!
Don’t worry—choose joy!!
Joy because He loves us,
Joy because He cares,
And no matter what life brings our way,
We can trust His presence there.
Joy because we’ve been redeemed,
Delivered from all sin;
Joy because the Holy Spirit
Lives and rules within.
Joy because we know one day
Our adoration will never cease
As we continually praise and worship Him
In unending joy and peace!
