Prayer and Reflections

Prayer for Our Leaders

He makes nations great and destroys them; He enlarges nations, and guides them.
- Job 12:23

This truth from Job reminds us of God’s sovereignty and the reality that His greater plans and purposes will not be thwarted, regardless of the circumstances that arise. Since He chooses to work through His children in accomplishing His purposes, we have a divine responsibility to seek and obey His leading in carrying out His will.

With the upcoming election in November, as Christians we have two major responsibilities:

  1. Pray. Pray for godly wisdom for those who are already in leadership positions and for those who will be assuming leadership positions as a result of the election. Remember that the purpose of prayer is to discern and submit to God’s will rather than bend Him to our will. Pray for Him to lead in your ballet choices.

  2. Vote. Vote as you are led after months of prayerfully and genuinely seeking His will. Remember, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9) Only He knows who He can use most effectively in accomplishing His purposes for us individually and as a nation. Our sight is finite and thus, our need to trust Him to lead and guide. The act of continual prayer will not only equip us to make wise choices but will draw us closer to God and empower us in the process.

What a difference we would see in our nation if just those who profess to be Christians were to do these two things!

From Reflections for America

Move in the hearts of our leaders, O God,
Open their eyes to see---
It is not their wisdom that will save us,
But coming to You on bended knee.

Give them courage to acknowledge their weaknesses,
Their pride and self-righteous ways;
And seek You in the midst of their helplessness
To deliver us in these turbulent days.

For it only as we seek Your Presence,
Confess our sins and ungodly ways
Will our nation find healing and wholeness
And respond in worship and praise.

For in You alone will we have power
To, in courage to stand, not succumb,
To the forces of evil that threaten
And the certainty of judgment to come.
